Das vorliegende Buch besteht hauptsächlich aus drei Teilen: der erste von Watanabe Yasushi (1934-2020, jahrzehntelanger Mitarbeiter der "Mainichi shimbun" in Osaka, Co-Autor des Standardwerks "日本アニメーション映画史" ["Nihon Animēshon Eiga-shi"; Geschichte des japanischen Animationsfilms; Osaka 1977]; s. auch Japan Media Arts Festival Archive) behandelt auf ca. 100 Seiten die "drei Pioniere" des Anime: SHIMOKAWA Ōten 下川 凹天, KITAYAMA Seitarō 北山 清太郎 und KŌUCHI Jun'ichi 幸内 純一.
Im zweiten Teil vollzieht Matsumoto Natsuki (geb. 1952, Dozent für visuelle Kultur u.a. an Universitäten in Osaka und Tokyo, Übersetzer, Sammler) auf ca. 40 Seiten seine Entdeckung von "なまくら刀" ["Namakuragatana"; Das stumpfe Schwert; Kōuchi Jun'ichi; 1917] nach und erörtert den Inhalt und das Umfeld dieses ältesten erhaltenen Anime für die Kinoverwertung.
Der dritte Teil (「アニメ」が始まった時 — １９１９年までの日本・欧米のアニメーションを通して) sollte eine Übersetzung meines Buchs "Animated Film in Japan until 1919" (Norderstedt 2017) darstellen. Allerdings wurden trotz gegenteiliger Versicherungen und mehrfacher Korrekturversuche meinerseits mehr als die Hälfte der Fußnoten und kleinere Teile des Texts weggelassen, dafür sind einige Passagen falsch übersetzt bzw. gegen die japanischen Originale "zitiert". (Offenbar gab es technische Probleme bei der Kommunikation zwischen Übersetzer und Verlagsredakteur.) Leider kann ich daher diesen Teil nicht empfehlen und verweise auf das englische Original sowie die Errata auf der entsprechenden Seite meiner Website.
Update vom 1.9.2020: Eine zweite Auflage des Buchs mit deutlich verbesserter und erweiterter Übersetzung meines Texts ist jetzt bei Shueisha erschienen.
This book has three main parts: the first, by Watanabe Yasushi (1934-2020, on the staff of the "Mainichi shimbun" for several decades, co-author of the standard reference work "日本アニメーション映画史" ["Nihon Animēshon Eiga-shi"; History of Japanese Animated Film; Osaka 1977]; see also Japan Media Arts Festival Archive), covers the "three pioneers" of anime: SHIMOKAWA Ōten 下川 凹天, KITAYAMA Seitarō 北山 清太郎 and KŌUCHI Jun'ichi 幸内 純一 on about 100 pages.
In the second part, Matsumoto Natsuki (born 1952, collector, translator, and lecturer for visual culture at, among others, universities in Osaka and Tokyo) discusses on about 40 pages his discovery and the content and context of "なまくら刀" ["Namakuragatana"; The Dull Sword; Kōuchi Jun'ichi; 1917], the oldest extant anime for the cinema.
The third part (「アニメ」が始まった時 — １９１９年までの日本・欧米のアニメーションを通して) should have been a more or less complete translation of my book "Animated Film in Japan until 1919" (Norderstedt 2017). However, despite assurances to the contrary and several critical messages from me, more than half of the footnotes and small parts of the text are missing, some translations are wrong, and some "quotes" diverge from the Japanese originals. (Apparently, technical problems affected the communication between translator and editor.) Therefore I cannot endorse this part of the book and ask any reader to refer to the English original and the errata on this part of my website.
Update 1 September 2020: A second edition of the book with an improved and much more complete translation of my text is now available from Shueisha.
